Clay Lounge, Boston Ma
Ahhhh Valentine’s Day…..a day where chocolate and flowers are the standard, but not for us! We decided that we wanted to try something new and then do lunch. Jessica and I have talked about trying our hand on a pottery wheel, so that desire took us to the Clay Lounge in Boston,Ma.https://www.clayloungeboston.com/.
There are several options for classes so be sure to check out their website for more details. We chose the one time two hour beginner class ( $180 for two people).

We arrived a bit early and waited for the others in our class to join us. Once the entire group had arrived we were asked to grab an apron and head over to the table with the pottery wheels. The nine of us were asked to introduce ourselves and to state if we were experienced or inexperienced with pottery. Other than one or two in our classes the others were beginners just like us. PHEW!
Our instructor( her name escapes me at the moment) sat at the head of the table and explained how the wheel/pedal worked as well as different techniques on how to work with clay to manipulate its shape. Looked pretty easy…… Oh was I in for a rude awakening!!! 🙂

Let’s just say it was a lot of information to take in but at that moment I was feeling confident I could make something.
Before we started we each had to choose what color we wanted our final piece to be. In the time we had ( 2 hours) our instructor told us that we should be able to make two pieces. We had unlimited amounts of clay to use so making mistakes would not be a problem. Well, let’s just say I had 2 hours of mistakes!!! Jessica , on the other hand, seemed to be moving along quite nicely and had one piece done while I was still fighting with my clay! My father (an Art teacher for 40 years) would have been mortified to see my lack of skill!! There were a few others in the group that struggled, which made me feel better. 🙂

I will say that our instructor was very supportive and offered to help anyone who was having a hard time. In the end, Jessica made two pieces and I made one, but I’m not sure you can even call mine a piece….LOL! About 15 minutes before our time was up, we cleaned up our area so the next group coming in would be ready to go.
Although pottery is not my forte, I really enjoyed it and was something we always wanted to experience. We will head back to Boston in 3-4 weeks to pick up our finished pieces.
If you’re looking for something different to do, be sure to put Clay Lounge on your list….. hopefully you will do better than I did 🙂 After our class we had a fantastic lunch at Antico Forno in Boston’s North End. Be sure to check out that blog post under Restaurants.
Happy Claying Around!
